about

We wrote this tune on the day we heard that John Prine was unwell and finished it the day he took his leave of the world, which is merely coincidence but felt heavy. We collaborated remotely with our dear pal Paul Defiglia (bass, piano) and Peri’s older brother Malachi DeLorenzo (drums, mixing). The quality of their playing should be obvious to all.

lyrics

poor John Prine
hope you had nothin left to do
the days are long
time is easy passin’, you
you may not hear
but they’ll write a hundred songs
on the day you die
poor John Prine

i hope they find
when they’re going through your things
some old cassettes
with some songs you meant to sing
but did forget
and that bright day
we’ll hear you singing yet

feels like now you’re really gone
one more chance to prove us wrong
hope to hear you sing that song
that goes like this... and then goes on

hey John Prine
i’ll bet you’re really riding high
in a classic car
from some old era that’s gone by
on the radio
there’ll be a ballgame or some local country show

and every time your car breaks down
may there be some bar around
with an early evening crowd
and a jukebox not too loud
and a little conversation soft and low..
and there you go

i’ll wait right here
for that Monday evening train
commuter rail
that’ll bring me home again
maybe crack a beer
to nurse while I sit watch the world that slides on by

poor John Prine
hope you had nothin left to do
the days are sad
time is easy passin’ through
i hope you’ll hear
about all the songs we wrote
on the day you die
poor John Prine
poor John Prine
